Culture, circulation and a memorable image come first. Hengqin Lejun Pangdu Plaza, by the Macau architects Siza Cham and Carlos Marreiros, is described as the first Portuguese-style commercial complex in the country, in the Manueline manner: twisted columns, shell and heraldic carving, and a Gothic crown gate. Lingnan arcades are set inside that European shell, and a fortress-like court gathers the shopping route. By day it is a foreign street; by night, cream walls and gold light make it a place for photographs and weddings.
